Oak Meadows Store. Gary C. Calvert provided this photo and provides the following information: The attached photo is circa 1929 of my grandfathers store at Princewick, WV. The store was built about 1925 by him (Oakey Meadows) & my great uncle Willis Meadows.

The name was Meadows Grocery but stocked everything as a general store would in those days. I looked at the pic with a magnifying glass & found a barber shop sign on the far right side. Willis was the barber. Also found a sign on the front of the store concerning the stocking of car parts. Keep in mind there were only two cars in the community at that time & Oak owned one so the extent of the stock was probably hay bailing wire, oil & grease. :-) In those years they would deliver groceries all over the area to folks' homes & did a terrific business. In 1932, grade school was taught in the back of the building by my great uncle Golden Meadows. A couple friends of mine, Coy Brakefield & Virgil Allen told me about the school. I practically grew up in the store during WW2 while my dad, Jake Calvert was in the Navy.

In 1944, two men got into a fight over a girl, went home & got their guns & had a shootout in the lot out front. Both were killed-Mr. Kelly being one of the men. I was in the store hiding behind a coca cola cooler.
