At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009, Dorcas June Thompson completed her journey to a better life. Her journey was made easier by the 18 years of loving care she received from the staff at Sun Bridge Pine Lodge, Appalachian Regional Hospital, the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, and, in her final hours, the wonderful staff at Genesis Healthcare in Hilltop. Much of this time June lived in a world known only to her and to God. June was born July 15, 1917, and was christened Dorcas June Lilly. The “Dorcas” was a name only a mother would give. To the rest of the world she was “June” or “June Bug” after that wonderful and unique flying insect that we all know and admire. June is the daughter of Hubert E. and Pearl S. Lilly, the sister of Wanda Thackston Wiseman and Paul R. Lilly, and the wife and life partner of James E. Thompson. She is survived by her niece, Paula Lilly Rugen of Scottsdale, Arizona, and her nephew, John Thackston of Beckley. While June’s immediate family is small in number, her extended family, those touched by her life of nearly 92 years, are far too numerous to count, but they define her legacy. Not blessed or burdened by fame or fortune, June still managed to enhance the quality of life for everyone she met through the passion she had for living. June was very much a part of the “Greatest Generation” which was featured in Tom Brokaw’s book of the same title. June was one of the first, if not the first woman in Raleigh County to hold both a private pilot’s license and an instructor’s license. She was taught to fly by her husband, James, who was a B 24 pilot in World War II and an instructor at the old Raleigh County Airport that was located on Route 19 in Skelton, a place where hundreds gathered every Sunday in good weather to watch the amateur air show put on by the locals learning to fly. When not flying, June could be found with James on the Black Knight golf course where they were competitive players. And when not flying or golfing, the two could be found on the banks of a local stream or in the woods in search of small game. June’s first love was music and, most specifically, the dance that went with it. These were the days of the musical, the days when movies portrayed the joy of living through music, laughter, dancing, and song. Fred Astair, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, and Ann Miller were nightly visitors to her home in the form of June and James dancing the night away to the music of “Top Hat,” “South Pacific,” “Oklahoma,” and more. Their talents on the dance floor were legendary at the Black Knight and at the annual “Follies” staged at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial on South Kanawha Street. But it was June’s smile, a warm embrace, a kind word, a genuine “thank you,” and the common courtesies extended to all she met that most mark her legacy. We will miss her, but our lives have been enriched by her and we will share that with those who follow. She and James are together once more in a very special place dancing with the stars, the real stars named Fred, Ginger, Ann, and Gene. And June would be the first to say, “You can’t beat that with a stick.” A memorial service will be conducted at a later date. Condolences may be mailed to the family at melton@wvdsl.net.
