Dr. Jack Binderman, 77, of Coronado, CA died on November 23, 2001. He was born in Harlan, KY and had a dental practice in San Diego from 1955 until his retirement in 1979. Dr. Binderman graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, and later served in the Navy Dental Corps. He met his first wife, Bernice Kagen Berner, while he was stationed in San Diego. She died in 1970. In 1975, Dr. Binderman married Mary Countryman. She survives him. He is also survived by his stepson, Edgar Berner and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Bea Binderman from Beckley, WV, niece Valerie Zimba, also from Beckley and a nephew, Philip Binderman from Woodland Hills, CA After being diagnosed in 1979 with chronic lymphatic leukemia. However in 2000, he was diagnosed with the melanoma that, despite surgery, caused his death.Rev. John H. Pemberton, 49, of 1034 Woodlawn Ave., Beckley, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Raleigh General Hospital following an extended illness. Born March 25, 1952, at Beckley, he was the son of the late Alexander Pemberton and Dorothy Frances Pemberton. Rev. Pemberton was a retired veteran from the U.S. Army and a minister. He was a member of United Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Hope. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Charles Pemberton; and a sister, Vivian R. Edwards. Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Hoskins Pemberton; three daughters, Kristi Allen and her husband, Samuel, of Detroit, Mich., Rachel Collins of Columbus, Ohio, and Bianca Hoskins of Oceanside, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kayla Allen and Samara Allen, both of Detroit; a sister, Harvenna Pannell of Fayetteville, N.C.; five sons, Roger Pemberton and his wife, Carolyn, of Hairson Township, Mich., George Pemberton of Detroit, Ronald Pemberton and his wife, Dollie, of Princeton, Michael Pemberton and his wife, Sandra, of Detroit, and Alex Pemberton III and his wife, Jean, of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Betty Pemberton of Beckley and Joann Pemberton of Clinton Township, Mich.; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Baptist Church, 304 Worley Road, Beckley, with the Revs. Phillip Copney and Nathaniel Carey officiating. Christine Light Bergendahl, 88, of Maxwell Hill Road, Beckley, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, in a Beckley care facility following a long illness. [She graduated from WWHS in 1930.] Born March 20, 1912, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Frances and Lydia Lowe Light. Mrs. Bergendahl was a long-time member of Mount Hope Baptist Temple and at the time of her death a member of First Baptist Church, Beckley. She was also a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and Lydia Light Mission Circle. She was a former member of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Bergendahl, on Jan. 1, 1986; two sisters, Betty Prater and Mildred Rothwell; and a brother, Elvyn Light. Survivors include a son, Charles Edward Bergendahl and his wife, Ella Mae, of Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Sarah Ann Williams and her husband, Jack, of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren, Amy Lynn Rush, Charles Allen Bergendahl and Eric B. Williams; and her dear sister and care giver, Eva E. O'Dell of Beckley. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with Dr. David Carrico officiating. Mrs. Lillian Honaker Ratliff, 78, of 206 West Locust Drive, died Sunday, April 16, [1989] at 1:53 a.m. in a Charleston medical center after a long illness. Born Sept. 11, 1910, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Graham and Lena Mitchem Honaker Sr. Mrs. Ratliff was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County, a retired bookkeeper and accountant, a homemaker, and was a 1928 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School at Beckley. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church where she was past Superintendent of the Junior Department of the church, past President of the American Baptist Women, served in various capacities of the Raleigh County Association of the American Baptist Women, a former member and past President of the Beckley Home Demonstration Club, and a member of the Beckley Shepherd's Center. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas G. Honaker Jr. Survivors include her husband, Clair Frank (Chick) Ratliff; a foster brother, Troy Mitchem Sr. of Beckley; three nieces and two nephews. Services will be today at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, 422 Neville St., Beckley, with the Revs. Robert Seymour and Holley Faulkner officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park at Beckley. Pallbearers will be James W. Patton, Earl Whitner, Thomas Honaker Jr., John Harman, Bud Hardison, Leon Neal and John Ratliff. KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Mildred Smith Prince, 91, of Davenport Circle, formerly of Beckley, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001. [She graduated from WWHS in 1929.] She was born at Hinton, and was a retired piano teacher and of the Baptist faith. She had been a resident of Florida since 1981. She was preceded in death by her parents, D. E. Smith and Margaret Hannah Presley Smith; and a sister, Brendt Burns. Survivors include a son, John Prince of Ballard; two daughters, Charlotte Garcia of Kissimmee and Margaret Parani of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Final rites for Mrs. Verona Brendt Burns, 49, of 206 Clyde St., will be held at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. H. A. McClung in charge. She died in a local hospital at 9 p.m. Friday [July 21, 1961] after a long illness. [She graduated from WWHS in 1931.] She was born at Hinton, Jan. 27, 1912, a daughter of Mrs. Hanna Presley Smith of Beckley and the late D. E. Smith. Her husband, Basil B. Burns, preceded her in death in 1956. Survivors other than her mother include three sons, Brooks and Billie of Beckley and Robert, Fort McClellan, Ala.; one daughter, Betty, at home; one sister, Mrs. Mildred Prince, of Washington, D. C. The body will remain at the Calfee Funeral Home until the hour of the service. Burial will be in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be W. H. Carney, James Lowe, H. A. Dowdy, W. R. Monk, Randall Wooddell, and Albert Allen.
Miss Myrza Mae Williams, 78, of 204 North Pike Street, Beckley, died Monday, April 16, [1990] at 11:59 p.m., in a Beckley hospital, following a long illness. Born Jan. 22, 1912, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Mae Bailey Williams. Miss Williams was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County, spent her childhood in Beckley, was a 1928 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and Concord College (Concord Normal School). [However, she is shown as a senior in the 1929 Echo.] She was a retired elementary school teacher, with 30 years of service for the Raleigh County Board of Education, having taught at Sophia and Sylvia Elementary schools and was a member of the First Christian Church at Courthouse Square. She was preceded in death by a brother, Moss Williams and a niece, Ella Mae Johnson. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Marie Williams with whom she resided for 47 years; a sister Mary Scott of Bassett, Va.; two nieces, Libby Callaway of Charleston and Lucy Lee Bone of Beckley; three nephews, Frederick Williams of Daniels, John Williams of Ballard, and John Scott of Beckley, and eight great nieces and nephews. The body has been cremated. Memorial services will be Friday at 4 p.m. at the Prosperity Cemetery. Any donations of sympathy may be made to the First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley. OAK HILL - The Rev. Andrew J. "Jack" Logan Jr., 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 at VA Medical Center, Beckley, following a long illness. Born May 28, 1925 in Eccles, he was the son of late Andrew Jackson Logan Sr. and Maude Hill Logan. Mr. Logan was a retired Baptist minister and a former car salesman and mechanic. He pastored the following churches; Gentry Baptist Church, Weirwood Community Church, Bradley First Baptist, and Cotton Hill Baptist where he retired after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Oak Hill Baptist Church and the Shirley Donnally Bible Class, Fayette Baptist Ministers Associations , VFW Post 3110, American Legion and DAV. Mr. Logan attended Woodrow Wilson High School and Appalachian Bible Institute. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a PFC in the 5th Ranger Batallion where he fought with Darby's Rangers. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Liberty of Jubilee Medal and others. He was preceded in death by brother, Rockford Logan; sisters, Juanita Meadows, Belva Daniels, Ruth Painter and Gloria Long. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rosebud Foster Logan; two sons, Robert Alan Logan and wife, Bonny of Orlando, Fla. and Andrew Byron Logan of Oak Hill; one daughter, Carolyn Rose Benda and husband, Bruce of Oak Hill; two brothers, Berla Logan and wife, Barbara of Phoenix, Ariz. and Paul Logan and wife, Betty of Murphy, N.C.; three sisters, Dorothy Jewell of Easely, S.C., Phyllis Alexander and husband, Bill of Orlando, Fla. and Melissa Fain and husband, Cecil of Murphy, N.C.; five grandchildren, Sarah Elaine Benda, Jeremy Benda, Robbie Logan and wife, Katie, Andy Logan, and Amber Logan; and by many nieces and nephews. James Victor Leeber, 52, of Johnstown Road, Beckley, and Prosperity, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born Nov. 7, 1949, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Fury Fred Leeber and Mamie Cagnina Leeber Craft. Mr. Leeber spent his childhood in Beckley and was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He also graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Master's Degree in English education. He was a former English teacher at Fairmont High School and Park Junior High School in Beckley. In 1999 he founded CompuClass Inc. on Johnstown Road. He was of the Roman Catholic faith. He was also preceded in death by his aunt who raised him, Elizabeth "Aunt Liz" Little, and her husband, Emerson; Mary Louise Leeber, an aunt who made her home with Mr. Leeber; and his stepfather, Richard Craft. Survivors include his companion, Tony McKinney; a sister, Kathleen Gianfrisco of Holbrook, N.Y.; two brothers, Fred Leeber and his wife, Jeannie, of Medford, N.J., and Anthony Leeber and his wife, Gina, of Fort Myers, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. FAIRBORN, Ohio - Margaret Blanar, 73, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, in Good Shepherd Village, Springfield, Ohio. Born July 13, 1928, at Price Hill, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Nemeth Blanar. Ms. Blanar was a 1946 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, a graduate of Wright State University with a B.S. and Central Michigan University, where she received her Master's Degree. She was employed as a budget analyst with Wright Patterson AFB, retiring in 1985, and performed tax preparation with H&R Block after her retirement. She was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fairborn, and a past member of Business Professional Women. Survivors include a brother, Michael Blanar of South Charleston; a sister, Mary Swim of Beckley; three nieces, Patricia Anne Clark of Proctorville, Ohio, Anne Thomas of Fairborn and Mary Elizabeth Swim of Morgantown; and two nephews, Michael Blanar of Tampa, Fla., and Stephen Blanar of Daytona Beach, Fla. BOCA RATON, Fla. - Earl Warden, 92, formerly of Beckley [Class of '29], died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, in Boca Raton following a long illness. Born Oct. 8, 1909, at Beckley, he was the son of the late George Walton and Lula Blake Warden. Mr. Warden spent his childhood and lived most of his life in Calloway Heights until moving to Florida in 1989. At age 14 he began working for the New River Company retiring as the chief engineer at the age of 65. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Courthouse Square, Beckley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mae Wardrup Warden, on Feb. 20, 1999; and by three sons, Carl, Ronald, and Earl Warden Jr. Survivors include two sons, Don Warden and his wife, Barbara, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Richard Warden of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Born May 5, 1950 in Beckley, W.Va., she was the daughter of Jessie Mae Acord and the late Oather Dee Acord of Beckley. Debbie was a 1968 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley and moved to Ohio in 1970. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister. WESTON - Thomas H. Covey, 93, of 463 Center Ave., died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, in Morgan Manor, Morgantown. Born Nov. 19, 1908, in Raleigh County, he was the son of the late Daniel Owen Covey and Josephine (Trail) Covey. On March 2, 1935, he married Margaret Elizabeth (Bailey) Covey, who preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 1998. Mr. Covey was an All-State football player at Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was a charter member of the Woodrow Wilson Sports Hall of Fame. He played football and baseball for the West Virginia University Mountaineers and was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineers sports fan. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas H. Jr. and Hope Covey of Morgantown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Myra Jo and Thomas D. White of Fort Ashby and Sharon and Billy D. Miss Mary Richardson Scott, 94, of Grandview, formerly of North Fayette Street, Beckley, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in a local hospital of natural causes. Born April 14, 1907, at Table Rock, she was the daughter of the late Claude and Annie Richardson Scott. Miss Scott was a school teacher with the Raleigh County Board of Education, having taught for 41 years at Mabscott Elementary and Central Elementary. She was a graduate of Shady Spring High School, received her B.A. from Concord College and her M.A. from West Virginia University. She was a member of First Christian Church, Beckley, since 1957, where she taught Sunday school in the kindergarten class for many years, assisted with Vacation Bible School and participated in Ladies Circle No. 4, where she was worship leader. Miss Scott was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County and a volunteer with the Raleigh County Library with 776 hours of service teaching adults to read. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene L. Scott; and a sister, Irene S. Keesee. Survivors include a brother, Minor L. Scott and his wife, Margaret, of Grandview; two sisters, Ethel V. Richmond of Grandview and Isabelle Bennett and her husband, Alton, of Charleston; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Joel Dennis Tawney, 19, of Beckley, was called to Heaven on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001. Born June 12, 1982, in Spencer, he was the son of Sandra Denise Huffman Mills and stepfather, Samuel Paul Mills of Beckley, and David Lee Tawney of Newton. Joel was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He loved spending time with his friends, four-wheeling, and loved his dog, "Big E." Joel joined his girlfriend, Corie Winebrimmer, in Heaven. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Dennis Bliss Huffman; and his great-grandmother, Melda Martin. Other survivors include two brothers, Jasper Lee Tawney and Marshall B. Rose Bell Warren Wagner, 94, of Kanawha City died May 25, 1997, at home after a long illness. She was a graduate of Beckley High School, attended National Business College, Roanoke, Va., and was employed in the insurance business for many years, with the former state Liquor Commission and then the National Bank of Commerce. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church, formerly Rebecca Littlepage Chapel. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving: several nieces and nephews. J.E. Samuel Riffe Paris, 75, of 226 Woodpoint Ave. in Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Washington County Hospital. Born Oct. 10, 1925, in Thurman, W.Va., he was the son of the late Warden Dillon and Alma Sue Riffe Paris. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Kesecker Paris, in 1968. He was a graduate of Beckley High School in Beckley, W.Va. He received a bachelor of science degree from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.; and a master's degree from Shippensburg (Pa.) College. He taught school for 35 years at Washington Street School and Western Heights Middle School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War, and retired from the Naval Reserve in 1985 as a chief aviation ordinanceman. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. He was a member of Washington County Teachers Association; AARP; and VP 68 Plank Holder Black Hawks. He is survived by his wife, Frances Faith Paris; a daughter, Rebecca J. Lohr of Hagerstown; three sons, S. Thomas Paris of Owings Mills, Md., Robert L. Paris of Rockhill, S.C. and Timothy L. Paris of Frederick, Md.; four granddaughters and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warden Thomas Paris. Services will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown. The Revs. Patrick Pierce and Don R. Karl Kenneth Kincaid, 76, of Stanaford Acres, Beckley, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at his home following a long illness. Born Feb. 13, 1925, in Terry, he was the son of the late William N. and Maud Smith Kincaid. Mr. Kincaid spent his childhood at Wright and was a 1944 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving with the 756 Tank Battalion, and received a Purple Heart for injuries received in Nuremberg, Germany. He was a retired employee of National Mine Service, where he worked as an inside salesman for 39 years. He had been a resident of Stanaford Acres since 1972 and previously lived in Mabscott. Mr. Kincaid was a life member of American Legion Post 32, Beckley, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 583, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4326, Midway, and the Disabled American Veterans. He worked as a volunteer at the Veterans Administration hospital, helping with bingo games. He was of the Christian faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, William N. Kincaid Jr.; and a half brother, Durward Smith. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ruth Brooks Kincaid; a brother, Andrew J. Kincaid and his wife, Faun, of Daniels; a sister, Mary Kathryn Kershner of Cranberry; and several nieces and nephews. Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. HIGH POINT, N.C. - Keith Wayne Cummings Sr., 60, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, in a Winston-Salem area hospital following a long illness. Born May 25, 1941, at Mabscott, he was the son of Hester Loudermilk Cummings of Mabscott and the late Stanley Cummings. Mr. Cummings was a road construction worker. He was a member of the UMWA and the VFW. He served in the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include two sons, Keith W. Cummings Jr. and wife, Heather, of Waverly, W.Va. and Alan D. James Alexander "Jim" Walton, Sr., 47, of 107 Brooks St., Beckley, died Thursday, October 4, 2001 at home after a long illness. Born August 14, 1954 in Beckley, W.Va., he was the son of Gloria A. Gilliam Walton and the late Roy L. Walton, Sr. He was a retired caretaker of Greenwood Memorial Park where he worked for over 25 years. He was baptized at the age of 8 and a member of Central Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Walton in 1972. He graduated from WWHS in 1972. He also attended Vo Tech. Minister Emma D. Johnson, 33, of Harper Heights, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at her home following a short illness. Born Oct. 30, 1967, in Beckley, she was the daughter of Fannie Lee Gilbreath of Harper Heights and the late Harry Johnson. Emma was a minister of Church of God MPG of T, Harper Heights, where she served as national and local Usher Board president. She was a 1985 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a 1990 graduate of Beckley College, where she received an associate's degree in fine arts and social work. She was employed by Olsten Home Health Services. She volunteered as a music teacher at House Prayer Christian Academy, Sophia. She was also preceded in death by her parental grandparents, Charles and Maymia Johnson Yancey and Margaret Gilbreath; a sister, Evonye Harris; five aunts; and five uncles. ABERDEEN, Md. - Cynthia "Niecee" Berry, 45, formerly of Stanaford, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, following a short illness. Born July 27, 1956, in Stanaford, she was the daughter of Lillian Greene Banks of Stanaford and the late Leroy Banks. Mrs. Berry worked for McCormick Spices as human resources secretary. She was a member of New Era Baptist Church, Stanaford, where she was Sunday school secretary. She was a 1973 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended West Virginia Tech. In 1980 she moved to New York, where she was employed by People Magazine. In 1988 she joined the U.S. Army. Robert Commodore Fleshman III, 48, of Beckley, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, following a sudden illness. Born April 15, 1953, in Beckley, he was the son of Jo Covey Fleshman of Old Mill Village and the late Robert C. Fleshman Jr. Mr. Fleshman spent his childhood in Crab Orchard and was a 1971 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He lived in Orange, Calif., for six years, moving back to Beckley in 1976. He was former owner of Commodore Hair Design on Johnstown Road and was most recently employed at Beckley Welding Co. He attended Mountain State University and Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the BYKOTA Sunday School Class. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert C. Fleshman Sr. and Virgie Fleshman; and his maternal grandparents, Fred and Sadie Covey. Other survivors include his companion Rebecca Chatfield; three special aunts, Lee Covey of Naples, Fla., Lyn Covey of Akron, Ohio, and Blanche Campbell of Beckley; three uncles, Ken Covey of MacArthur, Roy Covey of Paw Paw and Cethus Fleshman of Beckley; and several cousins. Thomas Venston Kelly, 48, of Ashwood Street, Beckley, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001. He was the son of Betsy Mason and the late Bennie V. Kelly. Tom was born and spent his life in Beckley, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1972. He was an employee of Sterling Smokeless Coal Co. and American Electric Power. An avid outdoorsman, Tom loved animals and being in the woods. Tom is survived by his daughter, Lori, and his granddaughters, Lauren and Sami Jo of Hico; his stepfather, H. Wayne Mason; stepchildren, Tiffany and Jeremy Scarborough of Beckley; two brothers, Bill and his wife, Libby, and their children, Todd and Kiley, of Shady Spring and Jim and his wife, Velvet, and their children, Vense and Sarah, of Huntington. Additionally, many aunts, uncles and cousins survive, including his special Uncle Bill and Aunt Chris Simpson of Melbourne, Fla. Tom was very moved by the recent tragedy in New York and Washington, D.C. Robert Walker Lucas, 43, of Florida Avenue in Beckley, died Monday Sept. 3, 2001 at his home following a six month battle with cancer. Born on Aug. 18, 1958 in Beckley, he was the son of Dorothy Gregory Lucas of Tolbert Street and the late Howard Ray Lucas Sr. Robert spent his childhood in East Beckley. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1976. He lived for a number of years on Tolbert Street. He was employed by the West Virginia Division of Highways and was of the Christian faith. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Robert Lee and Callie Mae Lucas and his maternal grandparents Henry Walker and Mildred Louise Gregory. Robert will be remembered for his great love of children and his "Happy Go Lucky" attitude on life. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Tammy Abshire Lucas and her children Robby, Will, and Emily Spencer, who considered him a loving stepfather; a sister, Carolyn Lucas DiLorenzo and her children Rebecca, Jennifer and Gregory; a brother Howard Ray Lucas Jr. and his wife Sharon and their children Meredith and David; a great niece Ashley; his father-in-law James Abshire and his wife Linda of Bolt and his mother-in-law Delores Owen and her husband Danny of Lerona, as well as a large extended family and a special friend Terry Ellison of Grandview. Howard Ray Dickerson, 29, of Scott Ridge Road, Beaver, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, following a rafting accident on the New River. Born July 6, 1972, in Beckley, he was the son of Ray and Frances Riffe Dickerson of Beckley. Mr. Dickerson was a 1990 honor graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, a 1995 cum laude graduate of West Virginia University with a B.A. degree in psychology. He completed his master's degree in child psychology in 2001. He previously worked for Timberline Health Group and was currently employed by Burlington Child Care Center. He was a ski instructor at Winterplace and formerly at Wisp Ski Resort in Maryland. Mr. Dickerson was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church and the Class of Joy Sunday school class. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and skiing. He was preceded in death by an infant brother; his maternal grandparents, Duffy and Bea Riffe; and his paternal grandfather, H.B. Dickerson. WISE, Va. - Jon R. Harding, 25, formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, of natural causes in Beckley. Born July 31, 1976, at Beckley, he was the son of Barbara Treadway Davis and Stephen Davis of Charleston, S.C., and the adopted son of Alexander Zan Campbell of Beckley. Jon was a student at the University of Virginia in Wise, Va., to attain a degree in sociology. He was a nondenomination Christian and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He was preceded in death by his biological father, Randy Harding; and his grandfather, Billy Gene Treadway. PIPESTEM - Blanche F. Ellison, 96, died early Wednesday morning, Aug. 22, 2001, at the University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., following a short illness. Born Dec. 10, 1904, in Pipestem, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Gussie B. Farley. Mrs. Ellison attended school in Mercer County through the 11th grade at the old Lerona High School and graduated from Beckley High School. She then attended Concord College, Athens, and received her degree in education. She taught school for more than 39 years, having taught in one-, two- and three-room schools the majority of her teaching career. She retired from teaching while at Pipestem in 1966. Mrs. Ellison was of a good mind and was able to recall much of history that she learned and witnessed during her life, and had the ability to share these stories with her family. She was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. Ellison was an avid gardener, having much enjoyment from raising her flowers to growing vegetables in her garden. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Carrie Keaton; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Ann Ellison. Survivors include a son, Jim Ellison and his wife, JoAnn, of Pipestem; three grandchildren, Marshall Ellison and his wife, Kay, of Flat Top Lake, P.K. Ellison of Beckley and Susan Ellison of Charlottesville, Va.; and eight great-grandchildren, Derck, Seth, Evan, Blair, Leah, Kelli, Josh and Zack. CROSS LANES - Clifford O. Richards, 49, formerly of Crab Orchard, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001, in a Charleston area hospital following a short illness. Born Dec. 29, 1951, in Beckley, he was the son of the late Clifford O. "Two-Way" and Illitta "Tookie" Smith Bedwell. Mr. Richards was retired from the West Virginia Library Commission. He worked at Affinity Coal Co., was a member of UMWA District 17 and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Trudye Y. Windle of Owensboro, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Owensboro Mercy Health System from respiratory complications. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, class of 1954. She attended Queens College and Marshall University. The Beckley native retired from Kaiser Aluminum, Ravenswood Works, and was a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church and its prayer ministry. She had been a member of Ravenswood (W. Va.) Presbyterian Church before moving to Owensboro four years ago. She was a member of the Ravenswood Planning Commission and was an active member of the Ohio River festival. She was active in the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Easter Seal Society and volunteered at Jackson General Hospital. Survivors include two brothers, Mel Windle and Jim Windle, both of Owensboro; several nephews and nieces; two aunts; and several cousins. Rose Bell Warren Wagner, 94, of Kanawha City died May 25, 1997, at home after a long illness. She was a graduate of Beckley High School, attended National Business College, Roanoke, Va., and was employed in the insurance business for many years, with the former state Liquor Commission and then the National Bank of Commerce. She was a member of Riverview Presbyterian Church, formerly Rebecca Littlepage Chapel. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving: several nieces and nephews. J. E. James S. "Scott" Caudill, 37, of Beckley, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in a Beckley area hospital following a sudden illness. Born March 26, 1964, in Madison, he was the son of James F. Caudill Jr. and Gloria Thompson Caudill of Beckley. Mr. Caudill was a parts manager for Charles Earehart Dodge. He was of the Protestant faith. He loved camping, golfing and NASCAR, and played music locally since the 1980s. He wrote songs and played rhythm guitar and sang with his latest band, Cold Harbor. He also loved spending time with his daughter. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Thelma Caudill. Other survivors include his wife, Debra K. Martin Caudill; a daughter, Amanda Rae Caudill of Beckley; a stepdaughter, Christina Sadler and her husband, Michael, of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Larry L. LEXINGTON, Ky. - Linda S. Gates, 56, of 423 Laketower Drive, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, apparently of complications from diabetes. Born June 16, 1945, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Gertrude Gates of Crab Orchard. Linda was employed by RE/Max Creative Realty of Lexington. She had been in the real estate business for the past 30 years. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1963 and was a graduate of Morehead State University College of Nursing, Morehead, Ky. Survivors include a son, Allan Creech of Champaign, Ill.; a stepson, Andrew Oppman and his wife, Alease, of Wisconsin; two stepgranddaughters; two brothers, Charles Gates of Blountville, Tenn., and Billy Gates of Westerly, R.I.; and a sister, Shirley Simms of Mabscott. A memorial gathering will be 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Lake Shore Village Clubhouse, Lexington. Service and burial will be in Lexington.
Bonnie Gaye Reed Winecoff, 74, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 9, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a year of declining health. Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Tazewell County, W.Va., Mrs. Winecoff was a daughter of the late Leonard and Leona Fern Ratliff Reed. She was a 1943 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, W.Va. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Episcopal Church Women, she had retired in 1987 from R.W. Norman Drapery Co. Survivors include husband, Ralph McKenzie Winecoff, whom she married April 20, 1957; and daughter Barbara Trexler, Salisbury. Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Wendell Phillips. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the Parish House of the church. Mavis Everl Meadows, 63, of Stonewall Road, Piney View, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at her home following a long illness. Born Dec. 27, 1937, at Otsego, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Wilson and Pauline Catherine Pendry. Mrs. Meadows spent her childhood in Keyrock and was a 1955 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She was owner and president of Meadows Machine Inc. and was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed her family, gardening and the outdoors, and was a resident of Piney View for 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Meadows; a son, Keith Meadows; four brothers, Raymond, Larry, Kenny and Roy "Joe" Pendry; and a sister, Brenda Sue Pendry. Survivors include three sons, Kevin Meadows and his wife, Beverly, of Piney View, Kem Meadows and his wife, Ginger, of Stanaford and Bruce Meadows and his wife, Barbara, of Shady Spring; five grandchildren, Jason, Jody, John, Joshua and Jeremy Meadows; four brothers, Gerald Pendry and his wife, Roselee, of Dagsboro, Del., Tommy Pendry of Shawnee, Okla., and Mervin Pendry and his wife, Judy, and Tim Pendry, all of Felton, Del.; two sisters, Rachel Wilkerson and her husband, Jim, of Zurich, Kan., and Rita Pendry of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Pamela Ann Coffman, 56, of Vine St., Beckley, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at her home following a long illness. Born Aug. 19, 1944, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Doris Hardin Mitchell. Pam grew up in the Beckley area and was a resident of Vine Street for the past 53 years. She was a 1962 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a graduate of Charleston Beauty Academy. She was a former owner of Billy Joe's and was previously working as owner/stylist of Shear Style. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph "Billy Joe" Coffman. Survivors include her fiance, Gary Tripp of Cleveland, Ohio, and his son, Bradley G. Tripp of Florida; two sons, Dennis Coffman and his wife, Bonnie, of Beckley, and Gregory W. Coffman of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Kenette L. Coffman of Beckley; two grandchildren, Denny and Ashlynn; two brothers, Lawrence Mitchell of Virginia and William Hardin of Florida; and a sister, Mary Janet House of Arkansas.
